Today Was A Long Day

Today Was A Long Day Hi there. Today was an incredibly long day. Like running back and forth between lab, eating lunch in 5 mins, barely making it to the dining hall before it closed kind of a day. My alarm was set for 7:30 am this morning. I went to bed at around 1 am last night (or I guess this morning). So basically I averaged about six and a half hours of sleep. And for someone like me, who sometimes finds ten hours of sleep to not be suffice, lets just say that the day was spent in a weird state of being subconsciously conscious. I managed to carry myself out of bed at around 8:30 am, giving me exactly half an hour to look somewhat decent, chomp down a breakfast sandwich and run across campus to the Koch Institute. I stepped outside and realized that it was unexpectedly cold. In retrospect, I should have checked the weather app when I first woke up. I didnt have time to go back to my room to throw on something warmer. Im not entirely sure I processed everything that happened in lab today. And I definitely checked off only about half of my to-do list. At some point, I escaped to Barker Library to write some field notes for my Global Health Development class. I ended up falling asleep instead. 5.12 (Organic Chemistry) and 20.110 (Thermodynamics for Bimolecular Systems) were big blurs. My assorted set of Muji pens inspired me to keep going and take notes anyways. We had a microquiz in 6.0001 (Introduction to Python) that I didnt really have time to study for. The website we were taking the quiz on crashed about two minutes in. I didnt get back to my dorm till 7:55pm, giving me about 5 minutes to grab dinner before the hall closed. I ended up green boxing dinner and treating myself to a spoon of food after every pset question I solved. I told myself I would go to bed early today and yet, here I am. My roommate is asleep. The lights are turned off.  I still have emails that need to be sent out and plasmids that need to be analyzed. My laptop is at 2%. My phone is at 1%. Pretty sure my internal battery is at 0%. On my defeated march back to my dorm room, I run into a good friend of mine. I dont really need to say anything for her to know that I have, in fact, had a long day. I havent answered any of her phone calls or replied to any of her texts in the past 12 hours or so. In terms of communication, Ive practically fallen off of the face of the planet. You know what Afeefah, were going to go to my favorite place on campus. It always makes me feel better when I need a pick me up. We end up here: When Im stressed out, I have a tendency to hold my breathe in. Until either my list of things to do is completely checked off. Or someone reminds me to slow down and take deep breathes. So here I am, standing in the middle of Lobby 7. Looking around at the long pillars and intricate ceiling work I walk by everyday. A place that I worry Im becoming desensitized too. Because I often forget just how beautiful it is. And yet a place that on long days like this one, offers a wisp of fresh air. A place that is uniquely mesmerizing at night. A place that remind me that I can either treat my day as a long list of things to do or just that, a day.  A place where I can momentarily escape into a comforting sense of serenity. These non-academic programs that are being cut are mainly the music programs in public schools across the nation. According to studies by the Gallup industry, â€Å"Budget cuts and shifting priorities have placed the music programs in more danger than ever. Already, up to 28 million American students do not receive an adequate music education, and cuts in education funding are either pending or have been enacted in more than half the states nationwide† (Salvestrini). School districts are looking at what subjects they consider to be â€Å"core subjects,† and in most school districts the music program is not fitting their definition, which is why the music program is one of the first subjects to be cut. The school districts are looking to build more classrooms for science and math courses, as well as decrease class sizes. In order to do this without having to add on to the school building, the school districts look for what they find to be a beneficial class. Therefore, the music education program is an area where the school district can achieve their goals by cutting that progr am out. Studies have shown that the music education program is very beneficial to students. This is why schools across the nation should save the music, so the future students have the opportunity to be involved, improvement in the students’ academics, students having more self-discipline, and the development of the students’ social skills. Because of these benefits, organizations outside of the school are trying to save the music, such as, VH1 and supportmusic.com. These budget cuts are not only affecting the students of today, but they also have a huge effect on the future students who may not even have the option of participating in a music program. In one of the recent National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) reports, â€Å"only 25 percent of eighth graders nationwide had the opportunity to take a music class† (Music). Now these budget cuts are not allowing the school district to decide, but the voters have the say in what goes on in the school district by way of their tax money. Elizabeth Nesoff, an author for the Christian Science Monitor, wrote an article about the budget falling in the August 2003 edition. She goes into greater depth, than the article about music education by implying that, â€Å"A lack of cohesive community concern for education and a greater focus on individual interests as part of the problem, namely that people without children are not always interested in funding school programs. It’s g etting much more difficult to convince people that music†¦ for some people is as important as tax relief for a lot of people†(Nesoff). Parents that have children in the music program should do what it takes to keep the program going, so that the future students can have the same opportunity. â€Å"Music education programs get cut because decent people are trying to make tough decisions in hard times. If people want ongoing music education in school, they have to let the policymakers know how much music education programs contribute to their kids every day of the school year† (Nesoff). These budget cuts have a big impact on the educational opportunities of the children of today and the children of tomorrow. â€Å"You can’t cut music without cutting something important out of our kids’ lives. It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to see that where there’s no quality of education, there’s probably not a music program† (Nesoff) . Therefore, the district shouldn’t cut the music program for the students today or tomorrow. Being an active participant in a music program helps students greatly with their academic studies. Nesoff implies that â€Å"Without music education, many fear a bleak future for children. The real issue is that we will have a society that is impoverished, that doesn’t have the cultural roots or the educational and discipline benefits that come from music education†(Nesoff). This quote states that without music education our society may lack academic improvement. Even the fundamentals of music have been proven to improve a child’s knowledge. An article called â€Å"Fun with Languages Responds to the Need for Music Education at Home and In the Classroom† backs up what Nesoff had to say by stating the fundamentals that music may improve in the students’ skills in our society. â€Å"Music helps children to learn math. When children learn rhythm, they are learning ratios, fractions, and proportions† (Fun). The music program not only improves the students’ math skills, but also their verbal skills. Students can learn from different foreign languages and cultural difference by the variety of music piece the instructor chooses. These skills help out on the verbal part of academics. Along with improving a child’s knowledge and understanding of their school subjects, members of the music program that have taken the SAT or ACT have scored higher than those students not in a music program. Along with having an advantage in classes, students that are a part of the music program tend to be more disciplined. An article by VH1 Save the Music states, â€Å"Researchers have found that children involved with music education are more likely to graduate from high school and attend college, and are less likely to be involved with gangs and substance abuse†(VH1). Not only do students in the music program stay in school, graduate, and stay out of trouble, but skills that are learned through the music program do not just apply to school, but when they are older and out of school. Salvestrini backs up VH1 by stating, â€Å"The new findings come on the heels of a decade of scientific research linking active participation in music with improved mental capacity in young children, students, and the elderly†(Salvestrini). This shows that students in the music program tend to more disciplined at that time and in their future. Students in the music program tend to be mor e disciplined, because the program teaches the students time management by being on time for practices and rehearsals. Some music students also play to relieve stress, which is better then doing some harmful act. The music program promotes better standards, because it allows the participates to stay actively involved in an activity and shows that they can be dedicated to one thing, therefore staying out of other harmful things, such as gangs. Along with self-discipline students can gain important social skills. In an article called â€Å"Inclusion in the Community,† Sonia Blandford states, â€Å"An inclusive approach to community music outside the classroom develops both technical and social skills of participating students† (Blandford). As a part of the music program students have to communicate with each other and form common bonds with other members of the music program, which allows groups of friends to develop. Within a group, students have to learn the social skill of leadership by taking a role and improving the groups’ ability. Also within a group, students learn the skill of problem solving, by giving each other feedback and making group decisions together. This sense of belonging gives the students who are in the program a sense of pride about the things that they are doing in the program. By working hard for a common goal, and striving for excellence, memorable experiences occur because of the opportunities that the music program provides. In my time spent in the music program I have had many experiences of a lifetime, some experiences I would not have been able to be a part of if I were not an active member of the music program in my school. These experiences range from contests that were hours away, to weeklong trips to Virginia Beach, to a day at amusement parks with fellow members, to parades, to concerts, and the many hours spent practicing to be perfect. People outside of the music program usually don’t know the feeling that a band member gets when their hard work pays off and the group receives a superior rating at a contest. These are the experiences and times that students know that what they are doing means something and matter to people other than them. The music program offers so many opportunities for students to have life long memories that t hey could not get in any other class. Music programs are being cut all over the country to help school districts fit their budget, so who is out there trying to help keep music programs in schools across the nation? In fact, there are multiple organizations that are working toward a common goal: bringing music programs to schools that do not have them. These organizations range from the well-known VH1’s Save the Music, to many more not so well known music help programs such as supportmusic.com. VH1 is one of the top organizations trying to save the music. â€Å"The VH1 Save the Music Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improve the quality of education in America’s public schools by restoring programs in cities across the country, and raising awareness about the importance of music participation for the nation’s youth†(VH1). With six years of help the VH1 Save the Music program has helped provide over $25 million dollars to many schools so that they have the money to support a music program. In their six years VH1 has put on a variety of concerts and started the â€Å"VH1 Save the Music Week† to help make the money that they donate. One of VH1’s top-rated shows is their annual â€Å"VH1’s Divas Duets,† which features some of today’s hottest music stars such as Beyonce, Lisa Marie Presley, Mary J. Blige, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Chaka Kahn, Jewel and Ashanti. VH1 has also teamed up with American Express to create â€Å"Blue and Save the Music,† which helps make donations to â€Å"Save the Music† when people use their American Express card. Even though VH1 Save the Music Foundation is a major part in helping out of music programs in schools, they are not the only group raising money for this cause. But the problem is that there will always be schools that have money problems, and when this happens they will have to cut certain programs to decrease their costs. But, after all the good the music program provides, why cut the music program? The music program may provide more skills and standards than other classes, so why not cut some other class? It also seems like schools are adding some other class or activity to their school district adding more cost to their budget, such as industrial arts, photography, or even drafting classes. On the other hand, with the organizations helping out, schools could rely on these organizatio ns to provide a budget for the music program. This is not fair, because there is a unequal treatment of different departments in the school. Due to all the benefits of music, the music program should be treated the same as other classes. In conclusion, I believe that all schools should save the music program by keeping the class in their curriculum. The budget cuts that the school district is taking apart of is not only affecting the students of today, but future students as well. The music program also helps students greatly with their academic studies and the students have more self-discipline. 30 Rhetorical Devices - And How to Use Them 30 Rhetorical Devices - And How to Use Them Rhetorical devices are as useful in writing as they are in life. Also known as persuasive devices, stylistic devices, or simply rhetoric, rhetorical devices are techniques or language used  to convey a point or convince an audience. And they're used by everyone - politicians, businesspeople, and even, you guessed it, your favorite novelists.You may already know some of them: similes, metaphors, onomatopoeia. Others, maybe not (bdelygmia, we’re talking to you). But at the end of the day, you’ve probably run into all of these devices some time or another. Perhaps, you’ve even used them yourself. And if you haven’t, don’t let their elaborate Greek names fool you - they’re pretty easy to implement, too. But before you dive in, let’s identify the different categories of rhetorical devices out there.Types of Rhetorical DevicesAlthough there exists plenty of overlap between rhetorical and literary devices, there’s one significant d ifference between the two. While the latter are employed to express ideas with artistic depth, rhetoric is designed to appeal to one’s sensibilities in four specific ways:Logos, an appeal to logic;Pathos, an appeal to emotion;Ethos, an appeal to ethics; or,Kairos, an appeal to time.These categories haven’t changed since the Ancient Greeks first identified them thousands of years ago. This makes sense, however, because the ways we make decisions haven’t changed, either: with our brain, our heart, our morals, or the feeling that we’re running out of time. So without further ado, here is a list of rhetorical devices designed to tug at those strings, and convince a listener to give you what you want - or a reader to continue reading your book. (Source: 20th Century Fox)Wham! Pow! Crunch! These are all examples of onomatopoeia, a word for a sound that phonetically resembles the sound itself. Which means the finale of the 1966 Batman is the most onomatopoeic film scene of all time.24) PersonificationIt’s a lot easier for humans to understand a concept when it’s directly related to them. And since rhetoric is used to convey your point more effectively, there’s naturally a rhetorical device for that: personification, which assigns human characteristics to an abstract concept.Personification is present in almost all forms of literature, especially mythology, where concepts like war, love, and wisdom are given humanity in the form of gods such as Ares, Venus, Saraswati. But anthropomorphism, which assigns human characteristics to animals, is almost as common, in everything from Peter Rabbit and Winnie-the-Pooh to The Hobbit and Watership Down.25) PleonasmDid you know that being redundant can actually be rhet orically useful? Certain words are so overused that they’ve lost meaning - darkness, nice, etc. However, â€Å"black darkness† or â€Å"pleasantly nice† reinvigorate that meaning, even if the phrases are technically redundant. Redundant phrases like these are called pleonasms, and they are persuasively rhetorical.26) Rhetorical comparisonsSome of the most prevalent rhetorical devices are figures of speech that compare one thing to another. Two of these, you surely know: the simile and the metaphor.  But there is a third, hypocatastasis, that is just as common†¦ and useful.The distinctions between the three are pretty simple. A simile compares two things explicitly: â€Å"You are like a monster.† A metaphor compares them by asserting that they’re the same: â€Å"You are a monster.† And with hypocatastasis, the comparison itself is implied: â€Å"Monster!†If you can't get enough rhetorical comparisons, check out these 90+ exampl es of metaphors in literature and pop culture!27) Rhetorical questionYou’ve probably heard of a rhetorical question, too: a question asked to make a point rather than to be answered. Technically, this figure of speech is called interrogatio, but there are plenty of other rhetorical devices that take the form of questions.If you pose a rhetorical question just to answer it yourself, that’s anthypophora (or hypophora†¦ they mean the same thing). And if your rhetorical question infers or asks for a large audience’s opinion (â€Å"Friends, Romans, countrymen Did this in Caesar seem ambitious?†) that’s anacoenosis - though it generally doesn’t warrant an answer, either. Do you know the three different types of rhetorical questions? 28) SynecdocheYou know how a square is a rectangle, but a rectangle isn’t necessarily a square? If you referred to all rectangles as â€Å"squares,† you’d have a synecdoche: a rhetorical device in which part of one thing is used to represent its whole. This differs slightly from metonymy, which refers to one thing by something related to it that is nevertheless not part of it. If you referred to an old king as â€Å"greybeard,† that would be the former. If you referred to him as â€Å"the crown,† it would be the latter.29) TmesisHave you ever, in a fit of outrage, referred to something un-effing-believable? If you have, congratulations on discovering a surprisingly useful rhetorical device: tmesis, the separation of one word into two parts, with a third word placed in between for emphasis.30) ZeugmaZeugma, often used synonymously with syllepsis, is a grammatical trick that can be used rhetorically as well: placing two nouns with very different meani ngs in the same position in a sentence. Sure, MA deals grab headlines, but what does this all mean to investors? To answer this quest ion, this tutorial discusses the forces that drive companies to buy or merge with others, or to split-off or sell parts of their own businesses. Once you know the different ways in which these deals are executed, youll have a better idea of whether you should cheer or weep when a company you own buys another company or is bought by one. You will also be aware of the tax consequences for companies and for investors. Defining MA One plus one makes three: this equation is the special alchemy of a merger or an acquisition. The key principle behind buying a company is to create shareholder value over and above that of the sum of the two companies. Two companies together are more valuable than two separate companies at least, thats the reasoning behind MA. This rationale is particularly alluring to companies when times are tough. Strong companies will act to buy other companies to create a more competitive, cost-efficient company. The companies will come together hoping to gain a greater market share or to achieve greater efficiency. Because of these potential benefits, target companies will often agree to be purchased when they know they cannot survive alone. Distinction between Mergers and Acquisitions Although they are often uttered in the same breath and used as though they were synonymous, the terms merger and acquisition mean slightly different things. When one company takes over another and clearly established itself as the new owner, the purchase is called an acquisition. From a legal point of view, the target company ceases to exist, the buyer swallows the business and the buyers stock continues to be traded. In the pure sense of the term, a merger happens when two firms, often of about the same size, agree to go forward as a single new company rather than remain separately owned and operated. This kind of action is more precisely referred to as a merger of equals. Both companies stocks are surrendered and new company stock is issued in its place. For example, both Daimler-Benz and Chrysler ceased to exist when the two firms merged, and a new company, DaimlerChrysler, was created. In practice, however, actual mergers of equals dont happen very often. Usually, one company wil l buy another and, as part of the deals terms, simply allow the acquired firm to proclaim that the action is a merger of equals, even if its technically an acquisition. Being bought out often carries negative connotations, therefore, by describing the deal as a merger, deal makers and top managers try to make the takeover more palatable. A purchase deal will also be called a merger when both CEOs agree that joining together is in the best interest of both of their companies. But when the deal is unfriendly that is, when the target company does not want to be purchased it is always regarded as an acquisition. Whether a purchase is considered a merger or an acquisition really depends on whether the purchase is friendly or hostile and how it is announced. In other words, the real difference lies in how the purchase is communicated to and received by the target companys board of directors, employees and shareholders. The Deal Start with an Offer When the CEO and top managers of a company decide that they want to do a merger or acquisition, they start with a tender offer. The process typically begins with the acquiring company carefully and discreetly buying up shares in the target company, or building a position. Once the acquiring company starts to purchase shares in the open market, it is restricted to buying 5% of the total outstanding shares before it must file with the SEC. In the filing, the company must formally declare how many shares it owns and whether it intends to buy the company or keep the shares purely as an investment. Working with financial advisors and investment bankers, the acquiring company will arrive at an overall price that its willing to pay for its target in cash, shares or both. The tender offer is then frequently advertised in the business press, stating the offer price and the deadline by which the shareholders in the target company must accept (or reject) it. The Targets Response Once the tender offer has been made, the target company can do one of several things: Accept the Terms of the Offer If the target firms top managers and shareholders are happy with the terms of the transaction, they will go ahead with the deal. Attempt to Negotiate The tender offer price may not be high enough for the target companys shareholders to accept, or the specific terms of the deal may not be attractive. In a merger, there may be much at stake for the management of the target their jobs, in particular. If theyre not satisfied with the terms laid out in the tender offer, the targets management may try to work out more agreeable terms that let them keep their jobs or, even better, send them off with a nice, big compensation package. Not surprisingly, highly sought-after target companies that are the object of several bidders will have greater latitude for negotiation. Furthermore, managers have more negotiating power if they can show that they are crucial to the mergers future success. Execute a Poison Pill or Some Other Hostile Takeover Defense- A poison pill scheme can be triggered by a target company when a hostile suitor acquires a predetermined percentage of company stock. To execute its defense, the target company grants all shareholders except the acquiring company options to buy additional stock at a dramatic discount. This dilutes the acquiring companys share and intercepts its control of the company. Find a White Knight As an alternative, the target companys management may seek out a friendlier potential acquiring company, or white knight. If a white knight is found, it will offer an equal or higher price for the shares than the hostile bidder. Mergers and acquisitions can face scrutiny from regulatory bodies. For example, if the two biggest long-distance companies in the U.S., ATT and Sprint, wanted to merge, the deal would require approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The FCC would probably regard a merger of the two giants as the creation of a monopoly or, at the very least, a threat to competition in the industry. Closing the Deal Finally, once the target company agrees to the tender offer and regulatory requirements are met, the merger deal will be executed by means of some transaction. In a merger in which one company buys another, the acquiring company will pay for the target companys shares with cash, stock or both. A cash-for-stock transaction is fairly straightforward: target company shareholders receive a cash payment for each share purchased. This transaction is treated as a taxable sale of the shares of the target company. If the transaction is made with stock instead of cash, then its not taxable. There is simply an exchange of share certificates. The desire to steer clear of the tax man explains why so many MA deals are carried out as stock-for-stock transactions. When a company is purchased with stock, new shares from the acquiring companys stock are issued directly to the target companys shareholders, or the new shares are sent to a broker who manages them for target company shareholders. The shar eholders of the target company are only taxed when they sell their new shares. When the deal is closed, investors usually receive a new stock in their portfolios the acquiring companys expanded stock. Sometimes investors will get new stock identifying a new corporate entity that is created by the MA deal. Why They Can Fail Its no secret that plenty of mergers dont work. Those who advocate mergers will argue that the merger will cut costs or boost revenues by more than enough to justify the price premium. It can sound so simple: just combine computer systems, merge a few departments, use sheer size to force down the price of supplies and the merged giant should be more profitable than its parts. In theory, 1+1 = 3 sounds great, but in practice, things can go awry. Historical trends show that roughly two thirds of big mergers will disappoint on their own terms, which means they will lose value on the stock market. The motivations that drive mergers can be flawed and efficiencies from economies of scale may prove elusive. In many cases, the problems associated with trying to make merged companies work are all too concrete. Flawed Intentions For starters, a booming stock market encourages mergers, which can spell trouble. Deals done with highly rated stock as currency are easy and cheap, but the strategic thinking behind them may be easy and cheap too. Also, mergers are often attempt to imitate: somebody else has done a big merger, which prompts other top executives to follow suit. A merger may often have more to do with glory-seeking than business strategy. The executive ego, which is boosted by buying the competition, is a major force in MA, especially when combined with the influences from the bankers, lawyers and other assorted advisers who can earn big fees from clients engaged in mergers. Most CEOs get to where they are because they want to be the biggest and the best, and many top executives get a big bonus for merger deals, no matter what happens to the share price later. On the other side of the coin, mergers can be driven by generalized fear. Globalization, the arrival of new technological developments or a fas t-changing economic landscape that makes the outlook uncertain are all factors that can create a strong incentive for defensive mergers. Sometimes the management team feels they have no choice and must acquire a rival before being acquired. The idea is that only big players will survive a more competitive world. The Obstacles to making it Work Coping with a merger can make top managers spread their time too thinly and neglect their core business, spelling doom. Too often, potential difficulties seem trivial to managers caught up in the thrill of the big deal. The chances for success are further hampered if the corporate cultures of the companies are very different. When a company is acquired, the decision is typically based on product or market synergies, but cultural differences are often ignored. Its a mistake to assume that personnel issues are easily overcome. For example, employees at a target company might be accustomed to easy access to top management, flexible work schedules or even a relaxed dress code. These aspects of a working environment may not seem significant, but if new management removes them, the result can be resentment and shrinking productivity. More insight into the failure of mergers is found in the highly acclaimed study from McKinsey, a global consultancy. The study concludes that companies often focus too intently on cutting costs following mergers, while revenues, and ultimately, profits, suffer. Merging companies can focus on integration and cost-cutting so much that they neglect day-to-day business, thereby prompting nervous customers to flee. This loss of revenue momentum is one reason so many mergers fail to create value for shareholders. But remember, not all mergers fail. Size and global reach can be advantageous, and strong managers can often squeeze greater efficiency out of badly run rivals. Nevertheless, the promises made by deal makers demand the careful scrutiny of investors. The success of mergers depends on how realistic the deal makers are and how well they can integrate two companies while maintaining day-to-day operations. Conclusion One size doesnt fit all. Many companies find that the best way to get ahead is to expand ownership boundaries through mergers and acquisitions. For others, separating the public ownership of a subsidiary or business segment offers more advantages. At least in theory, mergers create synergies and economies of scale, expanding operations and cutting costs. Investors can take comfort in the idea that a merger will deliver enhanced market power. By contrast, de-merged companies often enjoy improved operating performance thanks to redesigned management incentives. Additional capital can fund growth organically or through acquisition. Meanwhile, investors benefit from the improved information flow from de-merged companies. MA comes in all shapes and sizes, and investors need to consider the complex issues involved in MA. Why the Afro mobile market is developing so late and faster than any area that used to be at the same period of time. In 2004, only 6% of the African citizen owned mobile. The supply side was much higher than the demand side. And the prices dropped, but made the African mobile network market a huge potential market for the global players. They produced low cost and user-friendly phones and network plans to attract more and more customer so that the company can increase its customer base. But there some other criteria or which we also call as external environment of a company which affects a company to operate in that area. The Law of Land also affects the company to design its operation in a country. They may be the tax-policy, the FDI policy of the government, the policy regarding and regulating the telecom sectors etc. Because of these regulations, there are many Afro-nations like South Africa which hold a huge potential market. In South Africa, there are only three players in telecom network market. The heavy tax burden on both the operator and consumer is the major challenge for the industry, with an average taxation on the operators profits standing at 30%. For example, in Kenya, people pay tax of 26% on mobile communication and the operator pay the remaining 4%. The total tax paid is 30%. But still the government of these nations opines that the industry is highly profitable, despite of the fact that return on investment could be delayed due to poor infrastructure. The Afro-nation doesnt have the apt infrastructure or the geographical hindrances as well as the population is scattered. The main problem lies with the electric infrastructure. The company has to keep more than 2000 standby generators because of frequent power failure. On of the company operating in Kenya, Safaricom spends over KShs 171 million on diesels due to lack of power supply. This makes the cost of investment much high in comparison to the other area. The operating cost of the company is high in this area because of frequent power cut and even the tax rate is also high, thus bringing down the profit of the company. But it may be the future scenario of these countries which lures the global players. The company may sustain the loss in the short-run but it may earn profit in the long-run. Because the economy of Afro-nations are growing at a remarkable rate and the infrastructure are also gradually increasing. So it may in the long-run be aptly developed so as to favor the network industry. Moreover this is the entry level of the network sector in Africa as it is developing but once it get saturated the threat to entrants decreases because if they enter in to the segment, they will not find any extras to lure the customers.
